The End of Good & Evil

“Why are people so fascinated with good and evil?” he ponders aloud.

“It's the religious programming they receive,” she responds without much thought. It’s late, and her mind’s capacity for contemplation was applied to  the review of bank records.

“No, I mean really, why is that?” he insists.

Expectation of introspective reply infiltrates the space between them.

She attempts to provide more rehearsed detail, “It’s the effect of Westernized religion.”

Dissatisfied, he demands more engagement. “Western religion adopted their concept of good and evil from Eastern religion.”

She denies his claim.

“It's a matter of consciousness. Collective human consciousness divides people, actions, and events into two camps: good and evil.”

He interrupts, continuing with his own thoughts, “It's more of a spectrum. Some people are in the middle and just a little good or evil, while others fall somewhere farther towards the extremes of the range. That’s what the Yin Yang symbol is about -- good and evil.”

“The Yin Yang symbol depicts the balance of feminine and masculine,” she offers. “Our perception of human motivations is resourced from the evolution of our individual and collective consciousness,” she continues.

She gives him the debate he prompted. “When we choose to evolve our consciousness we shift away from regarding the world through the scope of good and evil. Instead, we notice that human motivation is sourced in wounds, belief systems, education, life experience, religious training, personal resources, culture, personal interests, and more. Each person is their own unique combination of these attributes. As we evolve our consciousness, good and evil fades. They are replaced with concepts of compassion and misguidance, healing wounds, and excavating buried emotions. We see that humans can adopt more elastic approaches to thinking, feeling, and behaving.”

“Upholding the duality of good and evil is dangerous. This concept keeps human consciousness locked into a two-party system where we are forever at odds with one another. All species on our planet desperately need us to release these two stale options in favor of Unity.”

“Unity acknowledges and celebrates our diversity. Diversity reveals how uniqueness contributes to the development of sustainable solutions. Sustainability invites the creation and maintenance of balance.  Balance simultaneously acknowledges the challenges of our humanness while activating our humanity. Humanity supports the courage to reveal extraordinary inner revelations without fear of marginalization.”

Complete in her thoughts, she pauses. Silence envelops the room.

He leaves, distraught about the end of good and evil. He does not recognize he is in his Covid pants until he is at the crossroad. The HOA manager is staring at him and shouts from his driveway, “Looks like you heard about the end of good and evil! Kind of surprising, huh?”

What are your thoughts on good and evil? On the expansion of consciousness? How do you believe humans need to change their approach to resolve our communal challenges, if any? What are your ideas to innovate sustainable solutions that involve spirituality, expanding consciousness, and activation of human potential?
